How Your WHY Gives You What You Want

What is happiness to you?
What makes you feel good?
What is important to you as a mother, as a woman?
What does the life you want look like?

These questions are important. Why? Because it’s all about the WHY!

Last week we talked about the one barrier to starting a business and living the life you want, and today we’re going to talk about the first way to overcome that barrier.

To push through self-doubt you need to be clear on your WHY. Why do you want to make a change in your life? Why do you want to start a business? The reasons are important because without a clear, compelling WHY to boost you up and over, you’ll remain stuck behind that barrier.

Women are starting businesses – at twice the rate of men! – because they’re undervalued in the office: the pay gap is real, to the point that the Harvard Business Review tells us that “at the current rates of increase, it will be 475 years – or until the year 2466 – before women reach equality in executive suites.” Even in an equitable workplace, taking time out to raise your children impacts your superannuation to the point that will make a difference between a comfortable retirement and one on the poverty line.

But of course, it’s not just about the money. Studies by both PayPal and Sarah Thébaud of the University of California tell us that women want balance, and they want to tailor their work around their family needs.

So I get it:

  • You want flexibility and freedom
  • You want to be the creator of your own destiny: be your own boss, earn as much as you want, spend the time with your children when you want, and how you want
  • You want to be challenged and doing something you LOVE.

I get it because I’m the same. I have my own WHYs! Essentially, my business creates the equilibrium that I want.

For some women, the WHY is simply a creative solution to what doesn’t work. They say necessity is the mother of invention and let’s face it: the standard 9-5 work day and most workplaces (although not all, kudos to those who do) do not support working mothers. School finishes at 3.30pm, for a start!

So you find yourself in a part time role where you are not challenged and are completely bored, because it fits in with your family routine. Or where you’re working for a wage that basically covers childcare, and if you are lucky, with a little left over.

You get up at 6am, straighten your hair, trek to the city, drop the kids off at childcare, wearing stilettos, putting holes in your stockings and doing something you hate, for what?

No wonder mamas are looking for a better solution!

Your own business is the better solution. Rather than waiting for things to change, business mamas make change happen. Their WHYs are strong and silence their self-doubts.

What is your WHY? Get clear on it, and watch your self-doubt evaporate!
